Working and thinking between flat and dimensional space, the artist often devotes time , material and energy to building work that leads to a blueprint for a subsequent piece (or series), rather than a final, complete thought. These “ Prototype” works fall into many brackets of finish, purpose and longevity. 

Part Quilt, part tile, part “wood”  draws from a number of distinct sources for both material construction and design vocabulary. Each  module was built a cube, and bisected into a ”tile“ module.  A channel was cut into the back of each piece, creating 1/2 of a rudimentary ( but consistent) cleat system for mounting the work onto a wall.  The face of each piece was spray painted, though a series of quilt pattern inspired stencils, and hand finished with sandpaper and wax to build a unique weathered patina. 

Assembled in mass, these small works create a non representational mural - harkening to colonial quilt design, and pixel based artwork alike.

This work will likely be repurposed and further manipulated- having served its purpose as an exercise , it now awaits its eventual deconstruction and inevitable reassignment into uncharted territory.
