Digitally Native

.GIF Tarot

The .GIF Tarot is a set of 22 digital renderings crafted using Instagram’s“story” feature. Mirroring the Tarot’s esoteric imagery and occult meaning, each animation corresponds to a particular card in the “Major Arcana.” This online work is a collaboration between Philip Lique, Aude Jomini, and Eben Kling.

In 2020, Lique began experimenting with Instagram’s GIF elements as components for building digital collages. Naturally, he gravitated toward Tarot as a foundation for creating a series of interrelated GIFs. Months later, he released the work via Instagram.

“My interest in Tarot comes without shame,” says Lique. “The history of the cards, their origin, the symbolic references, and the cultural differences intheir meanings fascinate me. I don’t consider myself an expert, but I have a fairly large collection of Tarot decks and still occasionally add to it.”

Following the release of The .GIF Tarot, Lique’s friends Aude Jomini and Eben Kling (collectively known as FEED) expanded on the project by building a browser-based program that “deals” a Tarot reading and delivers a MadLibs-style divinatory meaning.
