Bakehouse Art Complex

Obscured Publications

Commissioned by Bakehouse Art Complex, Obscured Publications is a site-specific collaboration between artists Philip Lique and Najja Moon that reimagines public wayfinding and viewer engagement. Installed throughout the historic bakery building’s labyrinthine interior, the project uses the architectural quirks of the space to encourage a socially distant, one-way circulation route—guiding visitors past artists’ studios and toward installations and exhibitions.

Wall-mounted book stations, shaped like chevron arrows, serve as both directional markers and platforms for discovery. Each station contains a book from a recent gift by the Boca Raton Museum of Art, now forming a new, permanent art library on the Bakehouse campus. The books are wrapped in artist-designed, double-sided broadsheets that obscure their original covers. Lique’s graphic patterns, inspired by mazes and grids, reflect his fascination with systems and navigation. In contrast, Moon’s gestural linework becomes a visual language—a notational exploration of sound, movement, and improvisation. Together, these covers prompt viewers to reconsider the act of selection, inviting curiosity rather than judgment.

Rooted in the spirit of the Fluxus movement, Obscured Publications integrates participatory elements. Each station includes a poetic prompt and a notepad, encouraging visitors to mark a passage or flag a page that resonates with them. Takeaway golf pencils bearing the phrase “Use this pencil until you run out of ideas” extend the invitation, turning spectators into active participants in the unfolding dialogue between art and text.
