Standards

The “standard” is a historical form of identification, with origins tracing back to the Roman Empire. Once revered as sacred symbols, these flags and emblems represented collective identity through complex iconography. This impulse continues today in coats of arms, family crests, national flags, sports logos, and (most recently) digital avatars.

Philip Lique’s  Standards both subvert and uphold these cultural tendencies, interrogating the ways we construct and perform personal, political, and spiritual identity. This evolving series of sculptures incorporated salvaged materials from previous works that have been deconstructed or destroyed, offering a layered meditation on legacy, reinvention, and the afterlife of form.
