Each city block of the map is a single “sticker” allowing for the “roads” to reveal the original floor's surface texture thus integrating the artist's work with the hotel's existing design elements. This material is a professional grade floor decal, designed specifically for the purpose of high foot traffic, low maintenance, and easy removal.
The artist fills each “block” of his map with an array of both digitally and hand crafted patterns and illustrations. The artist will design new patterns to supplement his designs in response to the hotel's unique architectural identity. What initially seems like a floor maze reveals its true identity (and utility) as a map when guests encounter the text You Are Here, beset within a shape that correlates to the hotel's location, and strategically arranged to appear in front of the lobby desk.
An artist who works in between design, sculpture and cultural programming, Philip Lique aims to engage hotel guests by intervening on an often overlooked architectural element: the floor.
You Are Here reassigns the lobby's purpose offering a scale shift for guests to consider as they orient themselves within either a single building, an entire city block or beyond.
