No Vacancy, Miami Art Week

You Are Here

You Are Here is an interactive installation that serves as an homage to the commonly seen “way finding” maps in public spaces, and a moment to recalibrate one's own spatial and contemplative awareness.

Referencing the current city plan of Miami Beach, Philip Lique applies a non-slip, vinyl map directly to the lobby floor of a Miami Beach Hotel.

Each city block of the map is a single “sticker” allowing for the “roads” to reveal the original floor's surface texture thus integrating the artist's work with the hotel's existing design elements. This material is a professional grade floor decal, designed specifically for the purpose of high foot traffic, low maintenance, and easy removal.

The artist fills each “block” of his map with an array of both digitally and hand crafted patterns and illustrations. The artist will design new patterns to supplement his designs in response to the hotel's unique architectural identity.  What initially seems like a floor maze reveals its true identity (and utility) as a map when guests encounter the text You Are Here, beset within a shape that correlates to the hotel's location, and strategically arranged to appear in front of the lobby desk.

An artist who works in between design, sculpture and cultural programming, Philip Lique aims to engage hotel guests by intervening on an often overlooked architectural element: the floor.

You Are Here reassigns the lobby's purpose offering a scale shift for guests to consider as they orient themselves within either a single building, an entire city block or beyond.

About No Vacancy:

No Vacancy is a juried art competition that supports and celebrates mainly local artists, provokes critical discourse, and encourages the public to experience Miami Beach’s famed hotels as temporary art destinations in their own right. No Vacancy 2024 marks the program’s fifth edition presenting 12 artists creating site-specific works at 12 iconic Miami Beach hotels. The installations will be on view from November 14 through December 12, 2024.

Each selected artist or collective will receive a stipend of $10,000 to realize their project at each hotel location. Artists were drawn from a call for submissions issued by the city and selected by representatives from the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places Committee, Cultural Arts Council (CAC) and MBVCA.
